CIS site coordinator motivates LHCDC Youth Academy

South Davidson Middle and High School site coordinator, Kevin Firquin, shared words of wisdom with students participating in the first ever Youth Community Development Academy on Aug. 6.

CIS site coordinator, Kevin Firquin, speaks to students participating in the first-ever Youth Community Development Academy sponsored by the Lexington Housing Community Development Corp.

“You have wonderful opportunities, but you also have wonderful temptations,” said Firquin to the group of about 10 high school students.

“Y’all can be leaders, but you’re never going to lead (others) until you lead yourself,” he added.

The two-day Academy was facilitated by the Lexington Housing Community Development Corp. and focused on community development topics such as job/career education, housing, volunteering, community pride, personal
finance, and the significance of higher education.

Firquin was asked by the LHCDC to help Academy participants understand the importance of staying in school and obtaining  higher education.

“It’s not what you’re going to do for a living that’s important,” he said, “it’s what you’re going to do with you.”
